Livelihoods

LIVELIHOODS

By investing in skills and vocational trainings, we enable our programme participants to, on average, triple their earnings on a long-term basis.

Our projects lead to higher and more stable incomes for women and youth, indirectly benefiting their families and wider communities. In partnership with local NGOs, we train people in a variety of income generating activities from nursing, bangle making and engineering to farming and other agricultural processes.

All of our projects are geographically appropriate and environmentally friendly, also taking climate resilience into account to ensure sustainability.

We also train participants in financial literacy, encouraging saving schemes and teaching our partner communities how to reinvest their earnings.

LEAF PLATES FOR EMPOWERMENT

Leaf plates, made from dried palm leaves, are traditionally used in India to make biodegradable and hygienic disposable crockery. These are often used at large gatherings, such as weddings, and have proven to be the key out of extreme poverty for 30 women in rural Tamil Nadu.

EMPOWERMENT FOR LIFE

July 2019 saw us launch our most ambitious programme in recent years: our flagship Empowerment for Life Programme in Ghana. At Tzedek, we believe that building the capacity and capability of civil society is the route to raising living standards effectively and sustainably. This programme, in partnership with local NGOs GDCA and YEFL, will improve the lives of the 85,000 people living in Tolon District.

CASE STUDY: FROM FISH FARMER TO POLITICIAN

With over 60 partnerships in India over 25 years, Tzedek’s income generating projects have helped thousands of beneficiaries lift themselves out of poverty. However, increased income is often just the start of changes in beneficiaries’ lives. We have heard many great stories, including changes in beneficiaries’ self-confidence and development as local leaders. Here is the story of Ms. Nagavalli from Tamil Nadu who has become a famous and fearless social activist.

VILLAGE SAVINGS & LOANS ASSOCIATIONS IN NORTHERN GHANA

Tzedek supported 70 Village Savings & Loans Associations (VSLA) groups in 2018/19, benefiting over 2.100 women. We have been working in partnership with a Ghanaian NGO called Nfasimdi Development Association (NDA). They were trained on the methodology by Star Ghana and follow the international standard for VSLAs.

GOATS, CHICKENS AND PIGS CREATE SUSTAINABLE INCOME

Vocational Training in rearing livestock provides a great source of income for indigenous tribal women in West Bengal, India. Digambarpur Angikar (DA) in West Bengal are Tzedek’s long standing partner. They are training 100 women a year in rearing poultry, goats and pigs. The women’s income is forecast to increase by up to four times, to £32 per month. As a sustainable project the offspring of the livestock will be used to bring in new beneficiaries to the project every year.
